Cutout tools

Trace

Make a short stroke inside the person or object you want. Scraps looks for the main connected subject touched by your stroke.

Outline

Draw a loop around the area you want to keep. With no selection, Scraps keeps the area inside your loop. With an existing cutout, it removes what falls outside the loop.

Add

Tap or make a short stroke over a missing region to add it to the current cutout.

Remove

Tap or make a short stroke over an unwanted matched region to remove it from the current cutout.

Erase

Brush away tiny leftover pixels directly, without running the selection model again. Choose from three brush sizes.

While refining, you can also use Narrow, Standard, or Wide, undo a change, compare the original overlay with Cutout only, and zoom or pan for a closer look.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start?

Tap Start with your photos and choose up to 20 images. Trace briefly inside the person or object you want, refine it with Add, Remove, Outline, or Erase, then add the cutout to the material tray.

How do I cut out more than one thing?

After adding a cutout to the tray, continue with the current photo, go to the next selected photo, or add more photos. Choose Create your page only when you are ready to arrange everything.

How do I fix an imperfect cutout?

Use Add to keep a missing region and Remove to exclude an unwanted match. Outline keeps the area inside your loop. If a cutout is already selected, it excludes what falls outside the loop. Erase is best for tiny leftover pixels. Zoom in and compare the tinted mask with the original photo before adding it.

How do layers work?

In the material tray, the left item is in front and the right item is behind. Swipe sideways to see more items. Hold and drag an item to change the layer order.

How do I move, resize, or rotate something?

Tap the item on the page, drag with one finger to move, pinch with two fingers to resize, and twist with two fingers to rotate. Text uses the same gestures after it is added.

How do I adjust a background photo?

Open Background, choose a photo, then drag it with one finger or pinch it with two fingers while the Background tool is active.

Where is my work saved?

The current editable draft is stored in the app’s private storage on this iPhone. Apple may include app data in your device backup. Use the share button to save a finished page to Photos or another app. Deleting the app can remove an unexported draft.

How are my photos processed?

Your photos are processed on your iPhone using a model bundled with the app. The current app does not operate a developer-hosted photo upload or storage service. See the Privacy Policy for details about Apple services and the third-party on-device component under verification.

The app feels slow. What should I try?

Close other memory-heavy apps, reopen Scraps, and retry with fewer photos. If one image repeatedly fails, note the iPhone model, iOS version, the tool used, and the step where it stopped.

What to include

  • your iPhone model and iOS version;
  • what you tapped, what you expected, and what happened;
  • whether reopening the app changes the result; and
  • a screenshot if useful—prefer a cropped or redacted image rather than an original private photo.

Never send passwords, payment details, government IDs, health records, or intimate photos. We will not ask for your full photo library.
